When a link opens a new tab (i.e. this one ... http://youtu.be/Lt7m4L9o0hU ) There is no way to close the tab. The little X doesn't appear on the tab. The only way to make the X appear is to click to a new tab and then back to the one you want to close. Then the X appears when you mouse over the tab. Very annoying. ::EDIT:: The same happens when you open a link in a new tab using CMD-click. The tab opens in the background but when you change to it there is no X. Also, when you close a tab and get moved to a different tab, there is no X. Need to move before it appears.

Um, it works fine for me. Click the link, watch the video, mouse up to the tab, click the little 'x'. I'm on SL rather than Lion though. Got any extensions that muck around with tabs at all?

Yep, works fine for me as well (on Lion). I tried to replicate the situation, but the tab closed and I got the close x as well.
Safari, however, can be temperamental at times, so I don't doubt your issue. I find when it's acting up that a reset helps clear things out.

Tried trashing the Safari preference file? Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.Safari.plist You'll need to set up any custom preferences afterwards.
Also, try temporarily disabling any Safari Extensions you have installed, if they're enabled... Safari > Preferences > Extensions (click the ON/OFF button)

It is known that MacBook Pros and iMacs with nVidia graphics (especially 2010 models) have problems with Youtube in general - many crashing (black screen) or having kernel panics. Could it be a related issue?

Well I did the prefs thing and restarted safari and it's working now. I'll keep an eye on it though to see if it comes back. --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=53.851133,-1.531240
