What's in a title aye? :? :oops: :lol:

So I've been reading this way and that lately, as those who've read my "Consolidating Computers" thread will know; I am currently in a transition phase with my computer(s) and have been toying with ideas... some (like this one) a little beyond my current expertise. Still, I'm going to post this one up as an enquiry/challenge to all - (it pieces together a number of thread topics dotted-around-the-internet) to see if I'm out of my head or on to something.

(first off, one of the main reasons for doing this is because I've an OEM version of Win7, and don't want to hack the termsrv.dll (as discussed on a few forums) to (re)allow concurrent user logins - where people have dual-controlled a single machine using USB resource assignment for users to "share" a pair of monitor, keyboard & mice to work independantly)

Take a look at this diagram of what I'm planning :

Image

The PC would have Win7 installed, with Vmware (free versions, either Player or Hypervisor) installed, running a second OS (probably my old Windows 2000).

Launched on the PC as a virtual instance, I would dual-display the PC - and host the virtual OS window on the monitor (fullscreen) leave the desktop free for the TV.

Win7 would run continuously serving the TV in the lounge with MCE & run my network shares & Tonido cloud 24/7.

The virtual machine instance would (should? could?) then allow me access into the PC (to do basic file sorting, library management/editing) without disrupting those in the lounge (from my bedroom, or with the laptop via RDP)

The only flaw I see with the whole affair;
(apart from being exceptionally fussy when I could (should?) just stop being a tight arse and drop some cash if I want such a "flashy" setup.)
Is having the concepts all work together - in particular the dual input control. I get the concept behind device assignment - it's the where/when/who stage of logins that stump my (theoretical) planning stage. And seeing as I'm a wuss when it comes to "just giving it a go" I thought I'd throw it out there.

And yes, if it comes back that I should have still bought a Proliant with WHS, I'm fine with that - I won't be (just yet) - but come on kids - ideas?

I see where you're going but it isn't going to work like that.

Vsphere doesn't really have a gui so you can't display stuff on different screens. You manage the whole thing via a small client app.

If you installed vmplayer on a machine (with win 7 or similar) then you could open up a different VM on each screen but you couldn't really have multiple keyboards etc plugged in to the host & expect them to only control their VM. Microsoft do something like this but it's expensive & is designed for schools etc.
