For power-related problems like not waking and not sleeping, trashing this file and then restarting immediately can sometimes help... Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration > com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
Just done this, it didn't work. I think I'm just going to have to make do with it not sleeping until I can back the whole thing up and then reinstall the OS. Thanks for all the help and advice people.

One thing I learned last week is that Macs, if they have the wake for network access in, go into a kind of semi-sleep mode if they are connecting via a newer airport base station. This requires the mac to wake every so often to check the surroundings and go back to sleep again. It also means that if the base station pings the mac because something else needs it to be awake, it will wake for that operation.
I'm not sure if this applies to you, and I really don't know where the references for this are likely to be stored, but it may be worth seeking out those and seeing if they differ from what you expect, deleting the files and restarting to see if that makes a difference.
