My sis had an iPhone 3GS. It developed problems which we think is due to the battery. I've now replaced the battery but she has since moved on to an iPhone 5. Given the 3GS is up and running, she would like to back up or transfer the info like contacts/pics/emails/texts to the 5.

She is currently 200 miles away. Would iCloud enable me to back up the 3GS and for her to download it down?

I'm assuming she's synced the phones against the same computer?
If she has, then all should be fine.

No, I have a feeling her data is on the phone where CW is and she's somewhere else with a new phone.

OK, In theory, you could set up iCloud on the 3GS, it would sync the info it contains up to 'the cloud' and she could then setup the same iCloud account on the new phone and it would sync data down. That would work. And she'd get contacts and email accounts and a few other things (apps, I think for one). She won't get text messages she's already received or most of her photos (only the ones currently in in photo stream would come down) or any music she didn't buy through iTunes (assuming she hasn't bought iTunes match anyway). The only way to get everything across is to back the 3GS up through iTunes then restore the backup onto the new phone, which obviously isn't feasible right now.

I suspect iCloud would do 'enough', temporarily. And it's free, after all. Better to do it on a wifi network though...

You need to remember to back up regularly as it is not automatic. I get messages saying that it as been two weeks since I backed up.
