I have inherrited a 27" iMac at work, with Mountain Lion. If I leave it on over night or it sleeps, I can't print when I wake it up again.

When I print, nothing happens, no error message and the print monitor doesn't start up, it is as if the print jobs a redirected to /dev/null!

Rebooting gets it printing again, until the next time that it doses off, then I have to restart it again!

The printer is a UTAX 1920, running over Windows Server 2008R2. The iMac is in the AD, but it won't allow domain logins (network accounts are unavailable).

Have you considered putting the printer onto an airport express? Then if you need to reactivate it all you need to do is turn off the wifi and back on again. That might find the printer again.

Is the printer driver up-to-date?
Have you tried any alternative driver (cups)?

The printer has its own Ethernet port and there is no wi-fi in the building.

It is the latest driver from the manufacturers web site.

Funny, I got home last night and the iMac here had decided it no longer wanted to talk to the Epson printer! I had to delete the printer and re-install it. The Windows machines just carried on printing.

I had the same problem with app downloads from iTunes, or accepting the password. Usually a restart of something usually resolved it.

Sometimes, you're usually better off with the printer driver Apple offers - to get that, you need to temporarily connect it directly to the iMac - it then detects the make and model and a pop-up will then appear offering to download the correct driver from Apple.

Once you've downloaded the Apple-supplied driver, disconnect the printer and return it to its original location - then go into System Preferences > Print & Scan, delete the printer if it's added it (because it will be the wrong type of connection - USB or Ethernet?) and add it again using the correct type of connection.

I had a similar problem with an Epson Stylus Inkjet printer at work, it was connected to a Mac via USB and then shared over the network - despite installing the latest drivers for it from the Epson site, it refused to work over a shared network connection. It was only when I connected it temporarily to each iMac directly via USB that I was offered the latest Apple drivers for it. Afterwards, it worked fine back over the network. The slight pain was that I needed to connect the printer to all 4 iMacs separately in turn in order to get the printer drivers for it onto each iMac.

It's a case of Apple trying to make the process more seamless and idiot-proof in 10.7 and later - which is all well and good, unless you have a slightly less conventional set-up and then you need to jump through hoops more than the people who just have a straightforward direct connection to a printer.

You can't connect it locally, a) they are at opposite ends of the building (my office and the print room) and b) the printer only has an Ethernet port. The printer itself is about 5 foot tall and 3 wide.

But your new iMac is able to stuck under your arm and carried...
Had a look on the UTAX site, and I'm drawing a blank on finding the model to get hold of the drivers. http://www.utax.com/C12571420062FB0F/direct/drivers-for-print-copy-wide-format-systems

Off topic - so you need to cross the building to collect something from the printer?
I have students who grumble about going ~20 metres up a corridor.

There was a typo, it is the CDC 1930, not 1920.

The latest drivers are dated 11.01.2013 for OS X 10.5-8.

Yep, we have centralised printers. With private printing (you enter a PIN number and the print job won't start until you enter the PIN into the printer), there are no privacy issues, so having centralised printing means large cost savings.

Do you need a driving licence to move it?

this maybe of no help at all ...

but on the mac systems we use(d) we had to install drivers then after they failed to work had to delete the printer from the settings, restart and then reinstall the drivers for the network printer before it would work, long winded but 2 bits of the same cherry seemed to make it work on the network ...

like i stated, this maybe of no help at all ...
