How to repair damaged disks that crash Disk Utility

I’ve had a HD that has not been repairable for a while - I thought it was pretty much dead - it was certainly not mounting, nor was DiskUtility seeing it. However, I just saw this on Mac OSX Hints, this technique seems to have done the job.
