Just a heads-up for anyone with a 1st generation iPod nano - the Black/White plastic one's that look like this... Apple have started a replacement program (< clicky) due to a risk of the batteries from one of their suppliers potentially exploding! Still, good to see Apple offering replacements on a 5 or 6 year old product - I wonder how many other manufacturers would replace hardware this old. Check your serial number using the link on that page.

I have one of these bought 09/06. Though amusingly the site linked to, tells me they have no record of the device.

Hmm, that's odd! Have you tried entering the serial number of the iPod nano on this page: http://www.apple.com/uk/support/ipodnano/earlier/(on the right hand side, in the "Check Coverage Status" panel) Check the you've entered the serial number correctly - if there's a O, try both a zero or a capital "O". Also, if you're passing an Apple Store, take it in and get them to check whether it's eligible.

Probably cos it was a refurb. Nothing wrong with it anyway. Thanks for your time though. Applestore it will have to be. (If I can be arsed)

Serial submitted and accepted, packaging for return of iPod on its way. TVM for the heads up.
I wonder what they will replace it with…

A refurb original Nano, or maybe a new Nano. It would probably be cheaper for them to send out a new unit than refurb an old one. Anyway, hope it’s good.

Any manufacturer that wanted to avoid a huge costly court action and fine.

I have just spoken at length to a nice man from support... it seems my nano has the wrong serial number. Long story short, goto Applestore. Tricky business that as I rarely leave home without a credit card

How did everyone get on, what model did you get as a replacement? Very fond of my original nano with the wheel... but still if it might burn the house down, probably worth swapping...

Wife has one but won't return it. It's not even used any more (she has a newer Nano) but I bought her it and had an inscription on the back so she's keeping it.
Personally I'd swap it!

So I had a skanky old scratched-up 2Gb Nano that my wife bought me as she was in Hong Kong when the Nano launched - it was working fine, but not really used. When the replacement programme came to light I tried putting in my serial number on the website, but it wasn't accepted - I presumed this was because it was from HK, and thought no more of it. With a bit of time on my hands in late January, on a whim I put the details in again, and this time had them accepted; the courtesy packaging arrived in due course and the Nano was duly sent away in early Feb...
Well I've just had a UPS delivery of a brand new 8Gb Nano - the current little square touchscreen one! Result!
So, if you have one of these knocking around somewhere and you aren't emotionally attached to it, send it back - it's worth it.

40 days after I sent my 4GB 1st Gen nano back, I've received a gorgeous new 8GB 6th Gen Nano! No manual or official Apple packaging, just a cardboard box with the Nano packed in, but it's a gorgeous little device. Love the FM radio and the touch screen. Very impressive Apple, although my wife isn't very happy I traded in something she bought me (and it was mint!), where I like to think that is has been the gift that keeps on giving

Well eventually found my way into the Brighton Applestore today. Spent about 30 mins waiting for the genius guy to get to me, blimey they're kept busy. Mostly people who have no idea whatsoever. Reminded me of that old chestnut where the support advised the caller to return the computer when the problem was a power cut. anyway i digress. The iPod is not eligible for the program! despite being sold within the stated dates and the model described. Doh! Still works great but it's not a 6th gen 8Gb is it?
