The next thing she's buying is Office, she really doesn't have the cash to spring on a Vista (or Win 7) install disc. I'd really not expect to have to do so, frankly, for a brand new computer.

You've already got the licence, so you don't have to pay anything. The disks are not what you pay for, it's the licence that matters. Just borrow the media from someone else, and use your licence. It's probably on a sticker on the bottom.

Which is cool if I know someone with a retail version of Home Basic. But I don't.
And really, should I have to? Can I not just get what's on the lappy to do what it should?
It's a new machine, the last thing I'd have thought I'd have to be doing is reinstalling the OS - isn't it simpler to just uninstall the bits n pieces?

Depends how many bits there are, and what they all are. That's exactly what I did on the Tosh, and it didn't take too long. Remember to do a backup when you're happy with it, to save having to do it all again.

I was just pointing out that there's no legal reason to buy a new OS, so cash should not be an issue. I'm sure someone on here would lend you one, assuming anyone's actually got one.

To be fair, from what I can see in the Windows Defender (is that the one?) control panel that deals with the software launched at start up, the biggest offenders are HP themselves, who start about 4 or 5 separate apps. And Norton, of course. There isn't actually a load of crud starting at launch. From what I can see. Although Norton's still giving me a huge popup.

Fresh install with seperate media... NOT the recovery discs, first thing I did to my Aldi laptop, was full of rubbish on it I didn't want which is down to the OEM

If you google and search for norton removal tool ,that will remove all traces . ;)
