Have just install a new i5 motherboard. Now bios, windows, disk management see the external USB hard drive but when try to open drive comes up with error "cannot open access is denied".
OS is Win7 RTM

The same hard drive works and opens fine in my sister's computer (Vista Ultimate)and also worked fine in my previous motherboard.

Does anyone know what could be causing this as cannot believe an i5 motherboard cannot use a standard USB hard drive.

Regards
Clive

Thanks for reply Saspro
Will double check, but do you mean permissions on boot drive or external hard drive as seems to have administrator rights on external drive.

On the root of the external drive.
You might need to grant yourself ownership (I've had to do this before)

Thanks Saspro for all your help.
Problem turned out to be U.A.C in win7 R.T.M blocking the drive, without any warnings given, disabling UAC resulted in immediate access to the drive.
Have no idea why U.A.C would block it or know how to reverse its action. So will leave it turned off.

again thanks
Clive

Glad it's working, UAC is a nightmare even on the full version of Windows 7 (advance copies ftw)
