I've just been playing around with the wiring inside my PC and I found a wire in the box of my GTX260 GPU and I have no idea if it is needed or what it is for.
The cable is made from two small single wires twisted together (but still separate).
plug 1 is flat, black and 4 contacts wide (but only 2 connected) and one of the not connected holes is filled in. i.e. [1][2][x][o] (x is filled and o is not connected)
plug 2 looks a bit like a fan power connection but with only 2 contacts. It is white and looks like it fits into the side of the GPU.
plug 3 is the same as plug 1 but only 2 connection wide.
Connect your sound card to your graphics card so you can output with audio over HDMI (less cables for HTPCs etc)

My first thought, before getting beyond "found a cable" was audio cable.
If you are driving an HDTV, it is the way to go, otherwise you don't really need it.
