A friend has dropped off his laptop (as they do) hoping I’ll fix it, it has a touch pad fault – the pad and buttons have stopped working and don’t even show up in Device manager as a Synoptics port pointing device anymore. I have done the normal stuff (bios, hardware checks etc) but have run out of idea’s.
Would it have be come detached from the MB do you think, I hate opening up laptops but I’m running out of ideas.

Not technically a fix, but a solution none the less. Get a laptop mouse. I have, it's miles better than using a trackpad. I found the Microsoft Model 1020 mouse to be the perfect balance of size and comfort for my laptop. Does it show up as an unrecognised device in device manager? If so it may just be corrupt or missing drivers/software. If not it sounds like it's either dead or a dodgy connection.

She's using a mouse at the moment, but it's just frustrating (not for me because it's not mine ) that it's stop working. No, it's as if the touch pad doesnt and never has existed.... wierd I may have to go in............

Have you checked to see he hasn't hit the disable key combination? I had a facepalm moment a couple of years back when I bought a new laptop and was trying to get an external monitor working and the keypad suddenly stopped working. I took the battery out and packed it all in the original packaging and took it back to the store and... it worked! Fn + F6 (I think) was a key combination to disable the synaptics keypad on the machine. Removing the battery had restored the default configuration and it worked again. Worth a check.

If the touchpad does turn out to be dead, I have loads here.
I could probably send you a few that might fit, as they're all more or less the same size and shape.

There is no symbol on the Function keys for the touch pad but I have tried going through them all just to see if one of them unlocks it, also I looked on the Asus site, they state F6 but no joy. cheers Bally, I need to open up the back and see what's going on, I'm not looking forward to it as i hate working on laptops...

You could also try looking in the control panel, as I believe Toshiba keep the touchpad options hidden in there... Not sure about Asus though.

Sometimes if you remove the battery and power ,and hold the on/off switch down for 30 seconds it can unfreeze the touchpad ,worth a try .
