First off, see my "Cheap or not" thread. Secondly, if you're really on a budget, you could build an AM3 system for less than £200 if you're picky. MSI 770-C45 motherboard is only £50.

But then you end up with an AMD CPU. As much as I want to back the underdog, they are still a generation behind Intel with their CPU's. If you are on a budget, you are likely to get more for your money with an intel. The main difference with the intel chipsets is the CPU's they support - the X48's will support the later 1600mhz FSB CPU's, X38 is limited to the 1333mhz FSB CPU's. The P45's will accept the 1333mhz ones and the P965 will only take the older 1066mhz ones.

As for the Nvidia chipsets, the 680i and the 780i and 790i are the top of their lines, but a generation apart. The 650i and 750i were the mainstream versions. However, unless you want SLI, you are better off with the intel chipsets.

Wha' wha' wha'? The new Phenom IIs leave the C2D range trailing, are generally better than the C2Qs and in some benchmarks even surpass the I7 920.

AMD chips are also much easier to overclock.

AM3 chips wiil also work in AM2+ socket boards, so you can save money by buying an older model board.

Core i7 920, the lowliest socket 1366 lays waste to even the 6 Core Opterons. Any benchmark they exceed in is urely comparative to the Daily Mail announcing in the early 90's that the Escort TDi was 'quicker than an Escort Cosworth', and they were not lying....the TDi would do 30-50 in fourth gear quicker than the Cosworth, as if that was a relevant comparison, even though the Cosworth would do what the Tdi could do in 2nd and 3rd in a third of the time !

Hmm, dont think Im going to go for an AMD cpu, used to have one, and got a rig running an AMD cpu - find they're not as good on performance or value.

LOL, for price/performance I have yet to see an Intel chip come close.

The Benchmarks speak for themselves.

The Phenoms leave the C2Qs and C2Ds trailing. Only the i7 offers superior performance, and is the price point really worth it?

Could you put off the GPU purchase for a bit?

Sadly no, I currently have a AGP rig with a P4 and DDR PC-3200 ram xD

Contemplating saving some money with a used gfx card, but I dont trust second hand leccy's xD

If I were to go for 2gb of ram and then add more when I get some more money and buy a cheaper lower spec gfx card and upgrade that, it might work out cheaper :S

Linux, I'm sorry, but CPC and bit-tech (not to mention plenty of other "enthusiast" sites) disagree with PC Pro. It might come close/beat a stock i7, but not an overclocked one. Especially when you can reach 4ghz on air. Not saying they're not a good purchase, I would just be more inclined to go with the cheaper X3 or X2 at the moment.

Oooh, oooh, oooh!!! **sticks hand up and waves** You could buy Oli's old card from the for sale section. He's a good guy and that would save you a fortune....

The Phenoms leave some CPU's which are over three years old trailing. Ok. But I am talking about the I7 of which you said

"in some benchmarks even surpass the I7 920"

Hence the Escort reference. I wouldn't trust PC Pro to benchmark a tortoise eating a lettuce. Somewhere like Anandtech, [H]ard OCP etc etc they are reputable places.

PC Pro print some stuff that is just laughable, loads of things spring to mind, the most hilarious was the deputy editor reckoning the remedy to his slow booting PC was install RAID. Failed to take into consideration the one million other things that would be slowing it down.
