Am I right in thinking the airport extreme won't work in iBook G3 only iBook G4s?

Yep, that's right - the iBook G3 took the Original Airport Card (54b) which is harder to find nowadays - ebay is your best bet.
MacTracker is a handy little utility to have around and will tell you specs on every Mac model to date.

It was only when they moved to the G4 processor that they gained the faster Airport Extreme Card.
