Hi all,

The Purple One's brother has a Vista (not sure of the version) PC and the DVD drive does read video or data DVD's. It is currently set to region 2. We can read music and data CD's in the device.

I have uninstalled the driver and restarted, but that made no difference...

Any ideas? Or will I need to grab a new drive?

Cheers,
Ben

Is it throwing up an error message, that the format isn't recognised? Or is it just not starting the media player and playing the video?

Which version of Vista does he have? Only Home Premium and Ultimate can play DVD video.

Home Basic, Business and Enterprise need an additional player, like VLC, in order to play back DVD video,

Try deleting the driver (Device Manager)

Then go into the following path in regedit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Remove LowerFilter and UpperFilter if they are there

Reboot.

Ah, missed that it does (doesn't) read data DVDs... Then it sounds like the drive might be duff.

CD & DVD use different lasers in the drive. The DVD one could be dead if it doesn't read any DVD's

Cheers guys, I've not had a chance to find out which version of Vista it is or to uninstall the driver and play with the registry yet, things have been a bit hectic. I'll let you know what happens :)
