Having some issues with the laptop at the moment. When I'm connected to mains power it works fine however if its running just from the battery it freezes, resulting in having to hold the power button until it turns off. I presume this is a battery pack issue but I have no spare packs to test.

Any diagnostics I can perform on the battery to see?

Specs?

What laptop, which version of Windows?

MS have announced a BIOS bug, in combination with Windows 7, with some laptops which cause it to think the batteries are dead... Doesn't sound like your problem though-

I agree. That issue massively reduces battery life, but I haven't hear any reports about freezes or crashes.

Could it be the ACPI settings or somesuch?

When you go to battery power the hardware will try to slow itself down to use less power. I'd guess that's where your issue is.
