Windows 7 or Vista

Because of the recent Amazon offer, I will be getting a retail upgrade copy of Vista and on release date, a full retail copy of Windows 7.

My dilemma is whether I should

1. install the Vista upgrade (I currently have XP which I may or may not be able to move to an old 2nd computer) and sell Windows 7 when I get it (might be worth quite a bit seeing as it is set to soar in price to £120+) or,

2. Sell the Vista upgrade now (get about £30) and wait for Windows 7 on October 22nd.

Everybody have been raving about Windows 7 but my worry is that as with any new software, it would take at least 6 month (service pack 1) before most niggling faults are fixed (especially for games and graphics drivers).
Besides, the general consensus of the forum seems to be that Vista 64bit is now fairly good after all the patches. On the other hand, people are saying what works in Vista should work in 7?!

Vista is only a upgrade, so should only sell for £30 on fleabay but 7 is full retail and likely to fetch more especially after 31st dec when the offcial price would be £149 so second hand price should be £75.
hmmm.... decisions decisions

surely the Vista and 7 is so close, its not worth upgrading then upgrading again!? waste of another £75 ...

You are right about it being cheap for us Brits but don't forget, it will shoot back up to £149 next year.

It will go up in price but everyone who wants it will get it early or OEM.
I've still got copies of Vista sitting around that I've unused but aren't worth selling.

Why not download the RC (which I think can just about still do) and give that a shot (its very stable for a beta!)- personally now I'm using windows 7 and home and work I would hate to go back to vista. Windows 7 is really what vista should have been.

MS admitted that Vista was released too early.
Windows 7 has had the proper amount of development time.

7's been around so long, I can't see any point bothering with Vista. I'm the same as you, I'd normally wait 6mths or whatever, but I don't think there's ever been this much agreement before about how good an OS will be. Besides it's like the Star Trek movie rule, 7 has to be great because Vista was rubbish ;)

hmm... a few months ago, the general consensus on forums seem to be Vista is now actually quite good after all the patches?

Vista has been OK providing you're hardware is good enough from day 1.

I rather like it (especially 64 bit as XP64 was rubbish).

Windows 7 on the other hand is still rather good.

IMO there was nothing wrong with it in the first place.

I was exaggerating somewhat. Vista's not rubbish. I just don't like it ;)

But I'm not the only one, and I think that's the main difference with 7. It seems everybody likes it. Also, hardware has actually gotten to the point where 64bit is starting to become important. Up til now, it's just been "nice" IMO.

thx for the feedback. SInce Vista is quite good (abeit not as good as 7). I am gonna go with that and sell the Windows 7 for £75.

Vista should be supported until November 30, 2016 and I know all the recent games will work on it :)

If you are coming from XP, anything is an improvement so it makes sense to go for W7, but if you have a fully patched Vista you may as well stick with it. I personally hate W7. I think the taskbar is dumb, benchmarks are nearly identical and it doesn't feel much quicker. The RC and the Beta I tried couldn't handle cut & paste in explorer without freezing and it is hard to see it as anything more than a service pack...that costs between £60 and £180. Vista 64bit is great and I'm sticking with it for now.
