Unfortunately said wife wants a new kitchen .. and i dont mean units & appliances, i mean knocking old kitchen down and building a new kitchen. Hence $90 saved = good. Ho Hum, another $90 on the mortgage. SAS, Glad it gets approval .. maybe your wife is more forgiving than mine .. Didge.

She's got very strict rules for replacing things with computers. If it passes her tests then anybody should be fine.

<<SIGH>> Well, my nice shiny 5450 arrived this afternoon. So I am now at home and my media center wont boot .. A bit of Googling reveals that my mainboard (Asus A8n-VM) doesnt have a PCIe 2.1 compliant 16x slot. So, I guess card goes back to ebuyer (it is in faultless condition fortunately). I guess I will just give up on the idea of bluray in this box until I upgrade the motherboard / processor / memory (which no doubt means that windows 7 will need re-installing ... the circle of PC .. ) Grrrrrr Didge

How much did you pay for that card? I'm about to build a media center so looking for parts at the moment - can't seem to find a decent case for a good price - all too expensive

it is xfx hd 5450 512mb ddr2. Clearly states PCIe 2.1 Bus on the box. . . It has both full size and low profile brackets so will fit mostly any case. Just make sure the mother board is compliant. Wish I had researched this a bit more .. I have an antec fusion case .. have had it for a few years now .. seems ok. Didge

Didge! If John's having your 5450, get a 4350 if they're still around. I have an A8N variant (SLi Deluxe) with an old PCIe slot and it works fine. I use optical to take the audio from the mobo sound to my surround amp.
Do you mean that Win 7 wouldn't boot altogether, or just the media bit. I run everything from my desktop is all.

The machine wouldn't even POST. Fans spun. At full speed. That was all! Pulled the card and it POSTed once again. I'm thinking an NVidia card is a better idea in an NForce board, even if it wont pass HD audio. I really need HDMI and some HD decoding. I would prefer not to have to mess around with looping sound through the card if possible. Anyone got any suggestions? Didge

nvidia cards don't have onboard sound so you have to plug a cable from the mobo spdif out to the spdif in on the card. It's no biggie. I've got an 8400GS with hdmi if you want to swap

Thanks SAS, I'll have a think about that .. I kind of tempted to get a cheap c2d mb / processor. It would run a bit cooler (quieter also). Just mulling over options right now. I'll come back to you.

Well as I pointed out, I HAVE an nVidia chipset board, very similar to yours. And it's running an ATi card just fine. Audio runs over HDMI if I want, or straight off the mobo with optical.

I'm not sure what you are suggesting .. that this card should work? If that is the case, what can I do to make that happen? The Bios is the most recent there is, I have tried uninstalling the nvidia drivers. I cant even get the machine to get past the POST stage with the card seated (i have reseated it 3 times) , i have unplugged ALL the other peripherals such as tv tuner card etc. The power supply should be powerfull enough (430 watt). I am at a bit of a dead end but if you have any suggestions - fire .. Didge
