The number of USB drives I've had over the years that have had problems coming out from sleep and not mounting

I bought a very cheap box recently that does that. It's fine if I just use it for doing manual backups, but it goes to sleep after a few hours and just refuses to wake up.

It does look smart though, and it's very quiet. I think it was about £5 (excluding disk) and it's solid aluminium, which is nice.

I use a VoyagerQ docking station with various 3.5" and 2.5" internal drives.
The drives sit vertically in the docking station and behave like any other hard drive once mounted in Finder.
I use it with a FW800 connection but it supports USB, eSATA and FW400 too.
It's a very good bit of kit.
However, if you want a self contained drive I can also recommend Verbatim's SureFire portable hard drive.
It's an external, cased 2.5" drive - I use the 500GB version.
It connects by USB, FW800, FW400 (via supplied 800-400 converter cable).

mark where did you get your VoyagerQ.

I think I got it from Amazon, but a quick look now and they don't seem to sell it.
I've also noticed that there's a redesigned version of the unit now which supports USB3 and up to 4TB drives, which is nice.
Sorry I can't be of more help. (8+(
