Thanks for the reply JJ. I've been perusing the shops and forums and was thinking of this one to ensure some futureproofing. I shall follow your security advice but will probably wait for my mate to install it.

That should be fine, as indeed should any ADSL wireless router unless you're doing something crazy with it. I don't have personal experience of it though, and I'm not really a fan of Belkin.

Note, you may only get the high speed wireless if you pair it with another Belkin product.

Your mate should have it up and running in no time, provided you have your ADSL username and password.

I was a bit startled at the bald "Netgear bad, Linksys good" statement near the top of this thread, as my experience has been quite the other way round. I've had several Linksys routers which were DOA and had to be replaced. The few Netgears I've used have been fine - except that in one case, yes I found that the built-in Atheros wifi adapter in a Compaq laptop would not connect to the DG834G.

However, I'm far from pleased with the firmware in the two Linksys routers I look after. One (WAG534G) cannot do IP address allocation to a MAC address (no support whatsoever in the firmware) and the other (WRT54GR) offers this feature but breaks if you try to use it.

One of my systems gets round these issues by using the Linksys as a WAP for the Netgear. The Netgear looks after the IP address issues and the Llinksys allows wifi connection to the Atheros adapter. ;)
