Do people still buy dedicated media players? I can't see the point myself as most smart phones can easily replace them. Why carry two devices that do the same thing?

Many people don't want or need a smart phone.

I use separate devices mostly because the battery in my phone isn't up the job.

Surely just carrying a spare battery would be cheaper, easier and more flexible? It would allow you to keep the phone running for twice as long, regardless of whether you played with it. I can change the battery on my phone faster than I could plug the headphones into a different device

Firstly, I would worry about losing the battery, or it degrading through being exposed to dirt etc.

Secondly, my phone takes a full five minutes to boot up from cold. Not ideal.

Finally, RIM batteries aren't cheap.

EDIT: Also, how would I charge it outside of the phone?

First, why are you more worried about losing or damaging a battery than a media player?

Secondly, wow - that's a long time. I thought mine was bad taking about 30 seconds from cold.

Thirdly, spare battery for mine is about £7.48 including a desk charger. High capacity battery is about £3.75 by itself.

Finally, I just swap them over once one is charged and then keep it safe in a little bag. Or rather I used to when I actually carried a spare battery. I might have to get one actually. Probably worth it for £3.75 :D

The only reason that comes to my mind is if you want to combine two different platforms: maybe have an iphone and galaxy media player to take the advantage of strengths of both. Or maybe have a Blackberry for communication/messaging and galaxy player for multimedia, possibly tethered for connectivity...

Or if, like me,

  • your phone is for emergencies only and therefore off except when being used
  • you neither want nor require any of the extra facilities of a smartphone
  • you specifically require your phone to not be able to download anything
  • you specifically do not want a touchscreen
  • you specifically require a media player that does not have a mobile or bluetooth antenna
  • you didn't spend lots on your wedding so a posh phone has no chance
  • you grew out of posing a long time ago
