If you got AppleCare you should have received a copy of TechTool Deluxe, did you try that? It doesn't sound like a software problem if everything was OK and then it wasn't even after a clean install, unless it slowed after an OS update?

It still flies under Windows Vista under BootCamp, so it isn't a hardware problem, I suspect it is a bloat problem from one of the updates last summer.

Did you update via Software Update? Or by using a combo updater?
After problems back in Tiger I never install an OS update through SU, I always download the combo updates.

I usually just click on the update now button when the updater prompts...

Gone from Mac OS X Lion: Rosetta, Java Runtime, Flash, Samba, Front Row http://macdailynews.com/2011/04/26/gone ... front-row/No more Front Row! I never used it anyway and it always got in the way.

Of that list, the one I will miss - in case you didn't know - is Rosetta. The others, well, so long and thanks for all the crashes. I have used Front Row occasionally. It looks impressive when you use it during a presentation.

I have some programs that need rosetta but then I have another computer that will not be upgraded. Rosetta is probably the only the only thing that I will miss as well.

I use Front Row quite heavily. My iPhone acts as a remote so I don't have to get up to put on the next episode of whatever series I'm currently watching.
Having learnt Java at uni, I still code in it from time to time, but seeing as Java will be easy to get back this is a non-issue.
I don't have any Rosetta apps any more, I had very few in the first place. While I understand that for some people this change will cost them money (upgrades, different apps), time (in learning new/updated apps), or perhaps stop them from upgrading, I think this is a good move. Applications that haven't yet made the switch to Intel have had long enough, even Apple has taken the time to release an OS that is somewhat updated and uses less of the old technologies.
Flash and Samba are also a bit 'meh' for me. I'm curious as to why they are cutting Samba, unless they are replacing it with CIFS.

The list is a bit misleading — Flash and Java will still be available, for instance, they just won’t be installed.

I quite agree, but in my case Adobe bought out Macromedia lock, stock and barrel, and then suffocated Illustrator's rival FreeHand. FreeHand, in my opinion, is far and away the better program, and I still cling to it like a shipwreck survivor because it does what I want more efficiently than Frustrator ever will - and this despite being dead in the water for six years of Illy development. Quite why the US competition laws didn't kick in and force Adobe to sell FreeHand on to another developer is open to question. If it means I have to maintain an older Mac running Snow Leopard indefinitely, then that's just what I may have to do. Lion, sadly, may be the point where I step off the upgrade bandwagon until such times as I may need new hardware for whatever reason. Does anyone know if you could run Leopard or Snow Leopard in a VM on Lion?

Apple doesn’t permit virtualisation.

Hang a second drive off your Mac and use that as a Snow Leopard boot drive, or shove a massive HD in your machine, set up two partitions, one for each OS.

Boo to Apple. Although "doesn't permit" doesn't necessarily mean "can't do it". Paul, that's probably what I'll end up doing, though it remains to be seen what benefits there will be for me to Lion when it ships. I may just end up running Snowie until either me or my Mac dies.

Apple doesn't permit but it is possible. Snow Leopard Server will run virtualised out of the box with parallels.
