All Macs have names. So you can see which one is which on networks & etc.

You don't? You'll be telling me you don't name your car next.

All my Macs have had a name which contains my business title and something that identifies which machine it is. As Jon mentioned, it helps if you run a network as you can see them all identified easily.

Yes but I usually call them by what they do. So one is called bidding since I use it to snipe on eBay among other things, though porn might be more appropriate  , the other is called Main.

Don't panic.

When you created the admin account on first running the iMac, it was called "Veato's Computer" or similar. You can't change this easily.

What you can do, though, is name the hard drive anything you like. It defaults to "Macintosh HD", I think, but if you select the hard drive icon on the desktop, then hit Return, you can rename it to anything you like. The same applies to any attached writeable hard drive or thumb drive, too. None of this monkeying around with alphabetical drive locations, either.

It's the user account short name that can't be easily altered.

Yeah but the short user name and the computer name are different things. For network visibility, the short user name doesn't matter, or am I wrong? :?

It all depends what shares you have available on your Mac that's visible to the network, but generally it's the machine name that's first seen on the network, so yeah you're correct.

Thanks, chaps.

It's a bit academic, because I doubt Veato will be working on a network just yet.

Yeah this thread has kind of gathered its own momentum! I'm hoping (well, praying!) that the desk comes today so I can get it setup properly with the new RAM and have a proper play. I can refer back to this for some useful help as I go along.

As you can tell, we tend to get a bit excited about these things :P

OOOOOOOOOSH

Image

Printer/scanner/tablet not installed yet and the USB card reader doesnt seem to work at all. External HDD is fine and speakers are awesome! Need a nice mouse mat. Suggestions?

It's funny watching me find my way around a Mac but a good learning process too.

Need to transfer my files over now and install software.

P.S. I dont have anything other than iPhoto at the moment. Where would it be customary on a Mac to dump my gigs worth of photos?
P.P.S. I spent 5 minutes trying to copy and paste using CTRL V/C   WORK DAMN YOU. oh
