I wiped and re-installed my iMac a couple of weeks ago. It made a huge difference. Safari now loadis in about 2 seconds, instead of around 20 seconds.
The same with iTunes and Apeture, they load fairly quickly now - Apeture used to take over a minute to load, before I could select anything, now it is under 20 seconds.

Try Dial a Fix it clears up loads of problems
