update, this will interest about 2 people in the world, me and the other user of a D510 intel atom cpu ...

the intel atom D510 pineview 1.66GHz 2 core (twin threads each core) with onboard 3150 gpu (gma950)
which i have, has poor graphic performance, but

the cederview cpu is 2 core (twin threads each core) with onboard 3600 HD gpu has better graphic performance

the intel Xorg cederview drivers for the intel onboard 3600 HD gpu work with and improve the performance of the intel D510 gpu with the 3150 (gma950) but without the HD as the 3150 gpu can not support HD

and the performance improvement is very noticeable on such a small system
just thought i would share ...

We used the D510 in our terminals. The performance was fine for our use.

My new tablet has the Atom Z2760, which is a very good performer. We have an older nettop, also with the D510, I was a little worried about how the Z2760 would perform, but it is excellent for the power consumption. I'm getting around 10 hours out of the battery at the moment and it can easily cope with HD video.

I think my old media centre was a D510, but with nVidia graphics. The only time it complained was with certain inefficient releases of Flash, and extremely high bit rate HD video.

Unfortunately the cooling wasn't up to the job, and it melted.

My Netbook has a processor of very similar performance. I still use it for work, because it's faster and lighter then my work-issued "Celery powered" laptop. It gets the job done without complaining.

The only reason I bought a more powerful machine for home was for gaming. A blooming expensive toy, basically.

the wife’s mac mini packed up this evening. it was getting red hot and has now gone bang.
(i did take it apart and clean it but it didn’t seem to help)
my other mac mini, that my youngest uses, is displaying similar problems but is still running after cleaning
(not much dust or anything else was found)

so have ordered a shuttle xs35v2 1.8Ghz intel atom cpu with gma 3150 onboard gpu, 500GB seagate hybrid HDD, 160GB backup HDD and 4GB ram.
total price £275, may have to order another very soon.

should all arrive by the end of the week. another linux system back in the house ...

Are they properly ventilated? You've not pulled stuff all ver them or blocked the airways with stuff? Seems a shame two have gone for you in such a way. How old are they? I presume firmware etc. is up to date?

I say it's odd as I've a G4 mini under the TV that's been on and running continuously for a long time now, and that's not showing signs of heat problems. I also have a current mini which replaced my PowerMac whose MB croaked in December. So far, no signs of overheating here.

I've had a mini as a media centre for a couple of years and it does get warm but it's never shown any sign of overheating. You can get various apps that allow you to monitor the temperature of the various internal components (including remotely, if you wish) to see which bit is generating all the heat.

the wife’s mini kept powering down due to over heating that’s why i took it apart to clean it but it wasn’t that dusty or clogged up
all vents where clear and it sits on top of the desk
it was purchased in 2007

last night it crashed again but this time its lost the HDD and would not boot
used the os x dvd to use disk repair but it would not let me do anything, it was all blanked out
a format failed as well, so i think the mini has gone to the great apple store in the sky ...

the other mini is suffering similar problems of over heating and shutting down but after a clean (not much dust or crud) its still over heating
all vents are clear and it again sits on a shelf above the desk top with good ventilation

so next month i will order the same as above and replace that before it goes bang
that only leaves the imac that my eldest daughter uses and that will be the last mac in the house ...

The biggest heat source in my iMacs are the screens. That does not apply in a Mac mini.

Ah, tempting fate I was. Last night my Mac mIni came up with it's hard drive S.M.A.R.T status 'failed'. It' s been running for two and a bit years with hardly ever being switched off so a drive failure is, if not expected, then maybe not surprising. It was a media centre, so there wasn't any valuable data on it thankfully. Luckily I bought it via the Apple education website which gives you three years Applecare on all Mac purchases. Off to the genius bar with you....

One of my iMacs is on 24/7 but has been faultless since I bought it.

I like the idea, but that doesn't even support my monitor resolution. It would be fine as a media centre, but it's too expensive just for that.
