remember, in native resolution on a MacBook Pro Retina, a full 1080p video picture fits in the editing window of Final Cut Pro WITH all the editing stuff present - timelines, effects editors, video bins and volumes. The will be scaling, and that scaling will in part be driven by the host software. Check how VMWare, Parallels, etc. handle retina displays and how they do any up scaling. That, I think, will be the important part of the equation.
