Well, there you have it, the iPhone 5C and the iPhone 5S... http://www.apple.com/uk/And, yes, fingerprint unlocking in the iPhone 5S, along with the new 64-bit (yes, 64-bit in a mobile) A7 processor, plus new M7 motion co-processor which works alongside the A7 processor. Apparently, it "Takes advantage of all the sensors and continuously measures the data coming from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass without having to wake up the A7" - whatever that means! iPhone 5S in 3 colours: black, white and, erm, gold. iPhone 5S - US prices: Starts with 16GB at $199; 32GB at $299; and 64GB at $399, all with two-year contract. (UK prices TBC) ___________________________________________________________ iPhone 5C in 5 coated polycarbonate colours - blue, white, pink, yellow and green - with the existing A6 processor, 8MP camera... iPhone 5C - US prices: 16GB configuration at $99 or 32GB at $199 (with two-year contract). (UK prices TBC)

The 5C is not that much of a cheap deal when you consider it is a two year contract.

Yep, just noticed the UK prices on the UK Apple Store - not really comparable to the US prices though as they must do it differently over there. The UK site only shows unlocked prices, which sound steep, but I suppose you need to see what subsidised prices the UK networks come up with on contract.
UK (unlocked) prices:
iPhone 5S: 16Gb - £549 32Gb - £629 64Gb - £709
iPhone 5C: 16Gb - £469 32Gb - £549
Note: the US prices are on a 2-year contract, so not really comparable.
Not that I can afford either model, but I actually prefer the styling of the iPhone 5C, curvier is nicer to me! Never been a fan of the iPhone 4 styling, which has continued with the iPhone 5, much preferred the older style iPhone 3GS.

The 5C is not that cheap even unlocked.

Not impressed with the 5C. It's an iPhone 5 in a plastic shell for the price an iPhone 5 was yesterday. And the colours are awful.
The 5S has some interesting things going on. Might be worth looking into but no more exciting that that, frankly.
Oh and they both need Nano SIMs which no other phone has needed before now, so you're not just going to be able to take a SIM out of another phone and use it. You're either going to have to cut your SIM down or get your service provider to send you a new one and swap your number over. I'm not sure what the pressure for trimming a few millimetres of plastic off the SIM was, the phones are no smaller.

The iPhone 5 has a nano SIM. Though I agree that the 5S is the more interesting phone. With 64 bit chip and finger print security it will mean it should be much more secure than every other phone out there. Other than that the camera might be a let down as the highest video resolution is 720p down from the 1080p in the iPhone 5. Its ability to take pictures might be improved over the drop in video quality.

Yeah, I was wrong about that. So the only people who can do a straight upgrade are the people who are least likely to... Apple's website says the main camera can do 1080p, are you talking about the facetime camera? I'd rather have 720p at decent quality and frame rate when video conferencing than 1080p that's over compressed and jerky tbh. Although it's something I pretty much never do. The main camera seems to have been tweaked mainly to shoot better pics in low light conditions. One plus of the new home 'button' - it's probably much more reliable than the old actual button. There's lots of stories about the hard button basically wearing out over time as it's clicked so often.

You are right about that. I am locked in for another year. I found the info here. http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/384115/ipho ... s-comparedIt might be wrong. The other upgrades are minimal but acceptable. There was not much else announced. Could there be another event planned? Yes that could be a big surprise benefit from the new home key.

No, it's still 1080p - just drops to 720p for slo-mo video. Looks like the 5s will work on O2's 4G network, not sure about 3 though.

I like the look of the 'c' it's just a shame it wasn't cheaper or I might be tempted. I expect it will be on the wife's upgrade radar in 6 months time mind you.

Looks like another upgrade cycle I shall be skipping. Can't believe how long I've had my iPhone 4, it's the longest I've ever had a phone. Just over three years now. The previous best was about 14 months.

I looked at that, I think it will. Mainly because IIRC 3 aren't actually making their own 4G network, they're simply renting some space on O2's. Apple's list includes only service providers which the 5S will work on and already have a 4G network up and running. I suspect the 5S will work on pretty much every 4G network in the UK eventually.

I suspect iOS 7 might be the break point. Traditionally, the oldest phone that Apple say a new version of iOS will work with will run it... just not very well. If I was you, I'd hold off on the update on your phone at least until real world reports of performance have come in.

Probably not a bad plan, it's starting to get a little clunky now.
