You can disable the huge notifier in the Free Anti-Vir but looking at this page

I have seen a couple of postings on other forums/blogs that this also disables any warnings you would have got if you got infected but I can't say for certain if that is true or not.

It's a bit naughty to disable the ad when you're getting such great protection for free, no? Seems like putting up with a daily ad is the least you could do tbh.

I hated AVG. I can't remember which version gave me problems but I distinctly remember v6 as problem-free and simplistic. They then decided to jazz it up to match vista and other programmes, becoming much more bloated, incapacitating my PC (it would freeze when trying to update or scan).

Switched to avast. The only thing is to remember to disable to voice notification thing. Once, was in bed on netbook and suddenly a voice says "Virus database has been updated". Made me jump to say the least.

Not quite as bad as when you've got the PC in the living room and forget to turn off the speakers after playing some music loudly... Sitting down watching "Most Haunted" and suddenly the "virus detected" noise blares out making everyone jump... ;) :P

The bump prompted me to post. Antivir has been delightful thus far and apart from the ad (which doesn't bother me in the slightest) it hasn't required any attention from me. Happiness.
