Now that I have a few machines I will be using the family pack option from now on. Though because all the machines are mine I could use a single person upgrade next time. Though the family mac box set is a good deal for a few machines.

I've voted 10.4 (PowerPC) - that's what we have to use at work, due to the age of the Macs (mainly G5s, some G4s!) and the software we run. To upgrade the software to Adobe CS5 would require a complete move to Intel hardware which the company can't afford at the moment. Similarly, that would require an upgrade to 10.6 which might also have other implications in terms of compatibilty - printers, scanners etc. So we're sticking on our existing setup for the time being.

Same here, I'm not sure what we're going to do about CS5, will cost us a fortune. Apple always used to be so good about backwards compatibility as well, but they seem to have abandoned it now.

On the one hand, I'm not surprised. PPC hasn't shipped since 2006 ( ? )
On the other hand, Apple did support the Classic environment for a good six or more years...

Well, this is it. My PPC machine will still run 680X0 apps under emulation up to and including Tiger – that's backwards compatibility to 1985. Their backwards compatibility has all of a sudden been reduced to four years.

If you spend the best part of 2 grand on a studio workstation, you wouldn't expect to be forced to replace it in 4 years time. My machine was more powerful than I needed when I bought it and I never seem to have really used it to it's ability, and now I'm going to be forced to replace it.
