I dunno Tom - this site suggests it should be do-able in Leopard. :?
Most odd.

I'm at home, and if you want me to give it a whirl RedEyes, drop me a PM. I'm on Leopard.

I use FileZilla on Windows, Linux and OS X. It makes it easier to support and it is open source, so free. They have to install software, and being multi-platform, it isn't 100% OS X GUI compliant, but it works fine.

Just had a play in the Finder FTP'ing to my own websapce.
Nope, can't upload to it.

When we had to upload files at work, we used a web based portal - is that a possibility?
Other than that, Cyberduck gets my vote.

+1 I used to use Cyberduck a fair amount

+1 This has been my primary method for quite some time...

I hate to say you're wrong Ben, but you must be mis-remembering! The Finder never has written to FTP (and still doesn't according to this).

*scratches chin* I wonder what the heck I was using then, I know it wasn't SMB as that seemed to be really slow and changed all filenames to lower case :?...I probably am wrong, I just can't remember what protocol I'd have been using...

So it seems that a 3rd party app is the only way around it. Not as simple as I was hoping! Never mind, at least I know for the future...

Do you mean like yousendit.com etc? It is an option (I had to use it yesterday in fact) but 1) it doesn't look particularly professional, and 2) I've had a bit of concern from clients about file security and so on. Which was why I set up the FTP server in the first place.

What I'd like is some sort of HTTP upload to our server via a website, but I'm too lazy/clueless to get that figured out and properly secured.

Still, it's better than the system that was here before I came along, which generally involved putting CDs in the post!

We used a php thing IIRC. Used to .zip the files (usually graphic and Word files), upload it to the server where they'd be automagically unzipped ready for downloading as required. Public facing, there was the usual username/pass solution.

Are you able to set up SMB shares? As I know that OS X can definitely read and write to SMB, and you connect in the same was as before...

If you haven't the time to do something in PHP, there are some very simple tools you can buy. Do you remember the silly private server?

http://www.wfshome.com/

You can very quickly customise the interface to look professional and fit your corporate ID. Each user can have their own area, and access to shared areas. Different folders can have different read / write permissions etc. It's very good, and probably worth the money if you have lots of Mac users who don't want to be messing around in terminal!

I'll set up an example if you like so you can play with it.

I might just have to have a look at that - although FTP does what I need it to do, and is nice and secure(ish), it's a bit clunky from an end user POV - a nice flashy corporate branded website would be suitably impressive.

The amount of Mac users we deal with is minimal (yesterday was the first), but it'd be nice to have a one-size-fits-all solution.

How complex does it have to be. I use Dragster for some transfers. It’s a right-click and select the folder you want to upload to.

EDITS:
I am wondering if you need to set something on the server to allow write access from Finder.

How about setting up a webdav server?

Mind you, Apple seem to think you should be able to do it:

If you have CPanel on your server, you can set up Web Disk Access, which gives you access via Finder and WebDav.

It's not really that complex - clients send us images etc (print quality ones, so maybe 10 or so images @ 30-50mb each), we then move the files to another folder where our publishers can download them for printing.
I tend to give each client/publisher their own login with access to their own folders to avoid confusion (and so they can't see stuff that's got nothing to do with them) and move stuff around manually.
Not the slickest solution out there, but it works well enough - except when it comes to macs, it seems.
I'm using Filezilla server, I've googled to see if there's any options I can set to allow mac access, but have so far drawn a blank.

I'd like to try and avoid having clients have to set up software, as most of them are only ever dealt with once - due to the nature of our business, even our 'regular' customers will only need to do this once or twice a year.

You may want to try Expandrive a try.

I’m having a go with the demo, and I’m connecting to my FTP servers using SSH through Finder. It seems disarmingly simple to use.
