Got nothing against big phones (my xperia Z isn't exactly small) but there are good technical reasons why a bigger phone would cause problems for Apple. If you think about it, they've either got to reduce the screen dpi to make a larger screen of the same dimensions in pixels (which will be massively bad PR) or make it the same resolution as the iPad (which will be expensive) or introduce a new programmatic screen size, which devs won't like.
Personally,I'm not sure there's all that many people around who are thinking 'I'd buy an iPhone if it was only a bit bigger'. People who want iPhones buy iPhones because that's the size they are. People who primarily want a big phone mainly buy something else. Why introduce further fragmentation and complicate your logistics for a relatively small market segment?

I would agree with that, and they might simply add phone type features to the new iPads without the need to change much else. I also think that the iPhone is a great size perfect for making calls on. The other internet things are tougher on a small screen but the iPad is great for that. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Or just make the screen size scalable, like good OSes have always done... It seems mobile is lagging in the friendliness stakes.

Having seen a large number of Android 'tablet optimised' apps, my opinion is in user terms it ends up anything but friendly. It ends up looking a bit crap and working quite badly. Scalable interfaces are fine IMO for windowed GUIs, because any given app can have any given available size of display (i.e. window content area) available to it. In a device that essentially only shows you one thing at a time, optimising the app specifically for the screen you're showing the user stuff on works much better. Tablets are not desktop PCs.

A lot of that noise was more due to the fact when face time came out it was proprietary and would only work on Apple kit and through WiFi. After testing it out I went meh and never used it again. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4

Yes but Big D really likes to use his as an extension of his PC. Nothing wrong with that but I do not think that the market for scalable apps is big enough yet. To make all apps scalable might actually be a lot tougher in the mobile arena that I could imagine. Only the app developers in this site could confirm or deny that. iOS seems to do it by having iPads operating at one resolution and having two windows shapes. One for the iPhone and the other for the iPad. It must dramatically cut the development costs down for all concerned.

I meant to say that a lot of people rubbished video calling UNTIL face time came out then suddenly video calling (on an iPhone) was fantastic and anyone who didn't agree was obviously a Luddite lol Sent from my big ass Sony Xperia Z Ultra tabphonelet, using Tapatalk 4.

Android is not much better than iOS, Windows Phone also, currently. Only Windows 8/RT seems to cope with different screen sizes and dpi, going from 8" to over 30", from 1024x600 to 4K, from under 96dpi to over 250dpi. Some old, poorly written desktop apps don't work well, but the app developers have more opportunities than iOS or Android revs; one of the benefits of scaling down a desktop OS to tablets, as opposed to scaling up a phone OS to a tablet, I suppose.

My wife's nexus 5 had been up and running a week now. 1) I'm glad I have a HTC. The extras they throw in on top of Android (as part of Sense) are sorely missed. 2) It's used 40mb of her 100mb alliance in one day. 20mb by Viber (bloody stickers etc) - now removed. And 20mb by chrome. She hasn't browsed that much stuff. It seems excessive. Will probably replace it with Dolphin.

Couldn't she get a larger data package as part of the phone contract? Also can you set it up over wifi or connected to your computer? Thereby using your broadband connection?

Yeah. Wi-Fi is set up. That was all over am hour while we were out. That seems to be easy more data that I use and I hammer my phone's data.
She shouldn't use much mobile internet. I hardly ever come close to using my 500mb. Which is why I was surprised hers had used so much data in such a short space of time. Her need are mainly more talk time, less data. I've setup 3G Watchdog to deactivate data at 98% of her allowance.

The fact that you can deactivate the data is actually a very good option. My data needs are low most of the time but then occasionally it goes through the roof. 99% of the time mine is wifi. I still like the protection of an uncapped data package.

Well she's only paying £8 per month for a sim only contact.

Not bad. If it covers all that she needs then it should be enough. I think a friend of mine got his Three all you can eat contract for as similar sum. When my contract is up near the end of the year I might switch to another network and drop to a sim only deal. Though I might be looking for a good cash back deal to get a nice new shiny phone.

Boat browser isn't bad if you have any issues with Dolphin, and Opera has lots of data options IIRC but isn't for everyone in terms of layout.
