Upgrading to Windows 8 has saved me around 40GB of disk space over Windows 7.

Out of curiosity is that an actual saving or would you have acheived something similar if you'd done a clean install of 7?
I tend to find that if I do a clean install I'm a lot more picky about the applications and add ons that get installed again afterwards so tend to end up with a much more compact system than was previously the case (at least initially).

With all the same apps installed, it is saving 40GB, but you can probably take half of that for gunk and archived patches, that is only the Windows directory.

In total, I have regained 100GB of space, after re-installing all the apps I had previously.

IIRC the installer will let you create installation media such as a DVD or USB stick.

Thanks for that, I went with usb option.

Now I have another question:
I am nearly all out of space on my £74.4gb ssd with only 8gb free space left. It was all dandy with Windows 7, I think I had 30gb free but now after installing W8 it is all gone. I have also found a directory on my C: drive called "Windows.old" that is 17.9gb large. So:
1.Is that the reason why I have no space left?
2. Can I delete it?

1. yes
2. yes

The windows.old file is the old system files. Be sure to copy any files that you may want out of the Windows.old folder before you delete it. Once deleted, they are gone. You must be logged in as an administrator to be able to do the steps.

The Windows.old folder contains the following folders:

•Windows
•"Documents and Settings"
•"Program Files"

The Windows folder mainly stores programs and files that are required to run the earlier version of Windows.

The "Documents and Settings" folder mainly stores the "My Documents" folder and the Favorites folder. Additionally, the "Documents and Settings" folder stores the desktop files that were used by the earlier version of Windows.

The "Program Files" folder mainly stores the programs that were installed on the earlier version of Windows.

There is two ways to delete windows.old folder. Here is the simple step.

Method 1: Delete from C drive.

a) Open Windows Explorer, click on Computer.

b) Select C drive and you will find Windows.old folder.

c) Right click on the folder and click on Delete.

Method 2: Delete "Windows.old" Folder Using Disk Cleanup

a) Open Disk Cleanup by clicking the Windows button +C to open charms bar. Click on the Search charm.

b) Type cleanmgr in the Search Apps box in the right pane, and then click on cleanmgr.exe (Disk Cleanup) in the left pane to open it.

c) If you're prompted to choose a drive, click the drive you just installed Windows on, and then click OK.

d) In the Disk Cleanup dialog box, on the Disk Cleanup tab, click Clean up system files.

e) If you're again prompted to choose a drive, click the drive you just installed Windows on, and then click OK.

f) Select the Previous Windows installation(s) check box, and any other check boxes for the files you want to delete, and then click OK.

g) In the message that appears, click Delete Files.

When I went from XP to 7 I moved the windows.old file to my external drive "just in c ase"

I think I have used it once since but as its on a 1TB drive its not really taking that much room up

I had no idea how cheap windows 8 was. I've never upgraded windows before because it's so expensive and any pc I have is only for compatibility checking.

I downloaded the upgrade checker just to see if my laptop could take 8 and it said yes and it's 25 quid. So I'm downloading it now!

The reason it's so cheap is they're moving to the OSX model of charging you for a new version every year, with a silly name to go with it.

Next year is apparently going to be Windows 8 "Blue"

At that price I'm happy to pay it. If only they'd do the same with office!

Was gonna say, that's almost twice what I paid for it from Microsoft.

Why?

Because it's like the eminently hateful Windows 7 but with the few remaining bits of usefulness stripped out and replaced with an interface I can only describe as "spastic".
