I’ll be keeping my 4S for a good year or so before I start to think about upgrading it. There’s not enough in the 5s to tempt me over. They still haven’t got a 128GB model, which is surprising.

I'll be skipping this upgrade though. Although that was always my plan.
I am tempted to get a 5S though. Mainly for the new flash and the fingerprint scanner.

Same here. The fingerprint scanner is a real bonus. The slo mo camera might also be really good.

Still using my iPhone 4 here and as soon as I can I think I'll be ordering a white 5s.

Same here. I'm due a free upgrade from 3, and I was the first person at the local store to register my interest in the new handset, so fingers crossed that they come up with some sort of deal. I'm not holding my breath of course, but I'll see what they come up with.

Why would you need a new number? Just get a replacement SIM on your current contract. I can run up to 4 devices in parallel on my contract.

Past experience is that's not the way the operators do things in the UK. They send you the new SIM and at some point within a day or two the old one stops working and the new one starts. I suspect it's technically possible for them to do what they do for you, but they just don't. Or at least they didn't, anyway.

Why more secure? You can still enter the pin/password. The fingerprint seems to be more for convenience than a replacement for the password. Allegedly, if it can't recognise your fingerprint, it will ask for the password. (Allegedly, because I have heard a couple of podcasts talking about it, but haven't seen it in the flesh.

I think for business use, it's not going to cut it anyway. If you look at how a lot of enterprise systems impose security on mobile devices, it's 'only what we trust' system not 'everything but what we don't trust'. For example, even thougH Android 4 has face recognition and a couple of other fairly loopy unlocking methods, if you connect an Android 4 phone to a lot of enterprise systems even if you have that set it will say 'nope, not good enough, put a password/code in please' and it overwrites your lock setting with that. We've even had trouble because phones have the right form of unlock protection but not a stringent enough version of it. I can't imagine being able to domain join a phone (for example) and it allowing fingerprint recognition as a valid form of security.

Yep, just look at fingerprint readers on laptops. They have been a standard feature on business class laptops for over a decade, but they still don't replace a password, you have to enter your domain password into the fingerprint utility and it matches it with your fingerprint.
That said, it is very insecure, the company that provides the readers for all the big names uses a totally borked method of encryption that doesn't run in user space, can be easily cracked and gives the hacker root control over the laptop! No wonder most corporates don't trust such technology.

It could be argued that it isn't more secure than a password or pin code. However, it's a hell of a lot more secure than no pin code and with the inclusion of the fingerprint I think more people will use it.

I think that the point in the demonstration was that most people do not even have a simple password or PIN set up. For them it will make it much more secure. For you and I who have passwords it might make no difference to overall security, as I already have a 4 digit password and an 8 character password set up. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
