For the psu I'm thinking I need to get a high power rating as I'll probably upgrade this one to am i7 at some stage and they're meant to be a bit power hungry, aren't they?

I run a full setup on about 500w - 600w (quality psu) a fair bit

GPU is the biggest part of that TBH at around 250-300w full draw

Ok folks, build time is almost upon us, and I need some more advice.

I'm typing this on the main PC, which is way too noisy for my liking, and as such need to build a quiet PC.

I'm after suggestions for a quiet, (silent would be nice) case and PSU. I do have a couple of models in mind, but don't want to influence anyone, so any suggestions?

I'll be going with the i5 CPU, but will probably upgrade to an i7 at some stage, as in when the prices aren't as high.

Edit to add: Oh, just one more thing... I'm looking at this motherboard - Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H, Intel Z97, Socket 1150, Motherboard as it has VGA and DVI, so I can run both of my monitors. At some stage, I will get a decent dual DVI card, but does anyone have any information on how good the video output from the MB will be for playing games?

At a guess I think 1080p resolution and around 25 - 30 fps should be achievable but you'll probably have to dial back the detail level on anything relatively recent.
Depends on what sort of games you want to play.

I've got two Edge 10 monitors, both with a resolution of 1680 * 1050 and I am thinking of games like Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Half Life 2, etc. I will be getting the new Wolfenstein game as well, though I'll probably need to upgrade the CPU before that happens.

As I said, I will probably need a new graphics card at some stage, witl dual DVI outputs, but for now I'll see what the onboard graphics are like.

R4 every time

The only other one I'd throw into the mix is the Antex P183. The original P180 was quite a ground breaker in terms of minimising the noise that comes out of the case.

I've been eyeing up the Fractal for a while, (in fact I've got a feeling that finlay suggested that as well)

I mentioned the Nanoxia because Mrs V. likes it, but I don't agree with the logic behind her decision. Two doors are not necessarily better than one.

I'm not keen on the Antec, Jon. It's something about the holes on the front panel... not sure what it is, but I just didn't warm to it.

I own an R3. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them/R4 for a silent build with the right components. They're also a joy to build in. Really spacious and loads of cable management. I have a passive GPU and my PSU is Seasonic X series, where the fan only spins when needed. Cost a few quid, but well worth it for the quite if that's what you're going for.

Also, I wouldn't bother with an i7 myself for what it's worth.

I'll get the i5 for now, with the option to upgrade in a few years, unless... I've been looking at the system requirements for the new Wolfenstein game, and they say it needs an i7 CPU. I'll try it with the i5, just to see, but I may need to upgrade.

Look at the clock speeds, turbo maximums and hyper-threading. Buying a cheaper i7 is like buying a 316i with a cloth interior just for the BMW badge IMO.

I've read that the new Wolfenstein game should run on an i5, so that's what I'll be trying first.

I was under the impression that the main difference between the i5 and i7 models was that the i7's had hyperthreading so were a bit better at handling multi-threaded workloads but that doesn't tend to apply to most games. At the end of the day they've both only got 4 physical cores and the i7's don't run that much faster than the i5's.

Update: I've started buying some bits.

I decided against the Fractal Design case, and got this instead: BitFenix Ghost Black Midi Tower Soundproof Case
They didn't have the PSU in stock, so I got another one. I stupidly didn't check that it was modular, but the cable management on the case is good, so I'll live with it. It's the BeQuiet! 700W model.
I also got a 3TB Hard drive and a 120GB SSD.
I'll get the Motherboard, CPU and RAM at the end of the month, when I get paid.
