My dad made me a plinth for my Newton when I bought it. I could sit the little keyboard in front of it and type. I had the advantage - I could use the Newton in both horizontal and vertical configurations.

Going by the usual Apple exchange rate I reckon the pricing could start from around £400 for us brits.
$499 = £308 from xe.com so marking up the usual way leads to around £400.
Considering the 16GB 3GS iPhone costs £449 I think either the pricing of the iPhone will have to plummet or the next iPhone will have to be stonkingly amazing to catch up.
Also, devices have been spooted with iPhone OS 4.0 around so looks like another OS upgrade.
I'm very surprised at the 60 day wait before release though. The last time they did that was with the power book.
If the next iPhone isn't up to scratch I could see myself buying this and keeping a normal phone. Especially if there are some cheap data only tariffs going with it.

http://www.apple.com/ipad/#videoLOL, interesting video but I think the most interesting part is the bit of text that flashes up 8 seconds from the end. Maybe that explains the 60 day wait before release

They announced the iPhone months before they released it because of the mobile phone regulations. Once the FCC gets hold of it, it becomes public. So, yes, I’d agree with you on that.

Hmmm.
I've been trying to sell my MacBook recently, as I bought a Mini.
I planned to buy a netbook to run linux so I could surf the web and use Google Docs in uni. This could fit the bill if it's not stupidly priced.
Hmmm.

It wasn't commented on in the show but I've seen a video of someone using one of the demo units that showed a new 'file sharing' section of the settings app. They didn't open it to see what was going on in there, but a reasonable guess it's some sort of network sharing protocol like webdav or SMB possibly, with bonjour to allow zero-config. Basically some portion of the thing's disk space will appear as a shared drive for you to drag & drop stuff on to. When Steve was talking about the things that sync across via iTunes, 'iWork docs' wasn't among them... I'd assume that shared space would be very locked down i.e. you wouldn't be able to run code from it for example.

Uh oh, I'm starting to want one of these - only a wifi one mind, but it'll be great for the coffee table. With the impressive standby time, it'll be perfect for picking up for a quick google should something on tv spark my interest...
Plus, there's all my photo's too...

This is my way of thinking too. If there is a VNC client available for it, it will help with controlling the Mini under the TV. That}s on long-term tape recording duty at the moment. I’m pretty keen on the idea of having one. I think a WiFi only one will do me too. It would make an excellent portfolio of my photos.

There are several VNC clients for the iPhone, which it will run albeit at half screen size. I think it's a fair assumption at least one of them will get an iPad version soon enough.

I think that the option to browse anywhere is pretty good, especially with wifi. I cant see the 3G version being popular if you have to take out yet another contract to use it. I would not mind tethering it to an iPhone, but Steve has killed that idea.

Well, you could get a MiFi device, which would give you the option to use you laptop or your iPad depending on where you are going and what kit you take with you.
