I don't mind 7, but that's because it's basically XP

hateful windows 7? I didnt find anything hateful about W7 it was a vast improvement over Vista and as for the interface for W8, i must confess that I actually like it (on my laptop, it would be better if I had a touch enabled screen). For me and I can only say about my experience, I havent actually found anything thats annoyed me or put me off it. All though most of the time i spend in the desktop and only go to the metro start screen to quickly check my email otherwise it handles all my other computing needs.. such as BF3 and WOT

I guess if you're used to it it would be a pain, but coming from a mac, I don't notice it's missing.

Faster boot times, more stable, lighter footprint. It turned my Acer from a slug to a nimble ninja panther amongst other things.

Fair enough. I never actually had any problems with Vista, but then unlike most people I didn't run it on horribly underpowered hardware. I actually find the Vista experience to be broadly comparable to that of Windows 7, with a few visual tweaks thrown into the latter.

Agreed, Vista was a huge improvement over XP, Windows 7 put the polish on Vista. I like Windows 8, a lot. I find it is, in general, an improvement over Windows 7. The start menu doesn't bother me, with the pinning in Windows 7, I rarely use it anyway. For the odd occasion that I need to use the Start Screen, I find it better laid out and more informative than the old start menu. I never got on with XP, it was a step backwards from Windows 2000 and felt like it was designed by Fisher Price. It is what pushed me to Linux in 2003 as my main desktop. It was Windows Vista that brought me back from Linux and OS X to using Windows on a regular basis.

If I remember correctly, right clicking on the start screen will give you a "show all apps" type option at the bottom of the screen.
