I kind of like that you know. I'd almost prefer it if Lion was actually sold as that, rather than a DVD. For any mac that can actually run it, it would actually install quicker than off a DVD and they all have USB, so why not?

All Macs have USB and if the volumes of production bring them inline with DVDs, then why not? There would be less wastage as well as any unsold units could be loaded with newer versions of the software. You could even theoretically take them to an AppleStore and trade them in for a discount on the next version.

I like it. Must be what, 8GB? New OS out? Take the stick down to an Apple Store for the new OS to be loaded onto, for a fee. Some fancy-schmancy hardware level stuff would knock the bootlegs on the head too. Hmm. Of course, until you misplace it. DVDs tend to be harder to misplace, aren't they?

The problem is the early generations of Intel Macs, until 2009 they delivered them with crippled USB ports, which were artificially restricted to about 1/4 of the speed of an average PC. I am very surprised at the use of Core 2 chips in the new Air though (haven't had time to read the whole thread yet, so don't know if this has been covered, so apologies if I am going over old ground). The Core i3 uses less power, is smaller and generates less heat... The only possible reason is that they wanted to cripple the performance and battery life, in order to use the nVidia chipset, which doesn't work with the Core i3 chips...

I don't recall whether it was on Ars or The Register, but their suggestion was that the C2D was used so that they could use nVidia graphics.

IIRC, pretty much all mac laptops use NVidia graphics chips by default now don't they? <quick check> Yep, NVidia on the laptops, ATI (or whoever owns them these days) on the desktops... Jon

Still seems a little silly to equip the new machine with a slower, more power hungry and hotter processor, just to use the nVidia integrated graphics, instead of the Intel integrated graphics - which are more than enough for watching HD video etc.
