Why doesn't the iPhone let you customise SMS tones? Seriously, what's the reasoning behind that?
I've just put someone off buying an iPhone for this very reason, and I'm struggling to think of why Apple would omit such a blindingly obvious and desirable function?

Dunno, it's a drawback for sure, but it's by no means a deal breaker. I'd also like to customise my SMS alert tone.

Are you for real? That's ... not normal. It would never even occur to me that I couldn't use whatever alert tone I wanted

My phone lives on silent most of the time. I couldn't give two flying pigs testicles what the tones were for it; when it's off silent it's set to something remotely sensible. I'm not going to waste hours customising it. It's only more things to redo if I have to restore from a factory reset. Pointless.

With the amount of alerts for email, SMS and facebook I'm glad it's fairly unobtrusive. I didn't actually know you couldn't change it, but now that I know, I'm not too bothered.

I know a few people who've picked a really long sample just for a text message. When it goes off at their desk and they're not there it is really annoying. I'm glad you can't do that on the iPhone - the message tones are quite subtle.

Of course with the iPhone when it goes off half of London checks their pocket. I like to customise my phone to make it individual to me, not to mention differentiate the noise so I know the audible alert is for me.

OK, but presumably you'll be able to set a custom overall tone too? It's a waste of time otherwise. Of course, I won't comment on how the iPhone should have had this feature since the original 2G. Oh, whoops.

I have no idea. Maybe that will come with iPhone 5.

Even my first ever mobile phone let you choose what tone to use for text messages.

You can choose your SMS tone on the iPhone. You can choose from the vast library of six tones! Adding extra tones, ah, well... TBH, I don't care. I've never been all that bothered about ringtones and text tones, and the choices on the iphone are fine for me. I do think it's another shocking example of narrow mindedness on the part of Apple though.

It does seem a bit odd, especially as it would be so easy to do. That said, I couldn't really give a [LIFTED]!

I have a track that I use for my SMS tones on my non iPhone and would like to use it on an iPhone. It does make it a drawback. Maybe many features that we take for granted will be introduced slowly to maintain reasons to upgrade.
