I set and forgot the password to the Netgear router we got from Virgin.
If I press the reset button, it goes back to default factory settings, and I can start again?

Yes. I did that with a router I sold the other week, hit reset, then reconfigured it for the new owner, with none of my settings or passwords installed. |

Thanks, Dave. I was pretty certain it would do that, but I can't locate the instruction leaflet either. Perhaps I should cross post this to the Tales of Fail thread.

The model number should be written somewhere on the unit itself. |

+1. Either model no should be on the unit or sometimes is shown in connectivity icons. Thrn again you're probably using a mac, in which case i have no idea. When windows connects to a router, you can usually identify the make and model of the router. |

I'm not sure where we're headed with this. Once the unit was reset, and it comes up on the network, as soon as you try to access the internet through it you're asked to configure it in the browser. Couldn't really be simpler. I was just dumb enough not to remember the password I'd set before. Something I'd access more often I would remember such information. This falls under the usual "set up and forget" scheme - until you need to unforget. Anyway, it's all running nicely. I've regained control of the wireless and turned it back off again. All is fine and dandy. |

Knowing the make/model can help you find the default login and password details if it's not printed on the underside of the router. It's not always obvious. |

With Netgear you can save the settings out to a text file.

I use 1password to keep the log in details. Even if you have to add them manually it means you can change the password to something secure. |
