Has anyone here got one of the new Apple TVs?

I'm thinking of getting one, so I can stream media from my Mac. Am I right in thinking that I will be able to stream anything playable in iTunes to the device??

I'm not at all interested in purchasing/renting stuff from iTunes, I only want to stream media I've acquired elsewhere. ;)

Yes

To me it seems pretty expensive for a streaming client, a WD TV usb box + a nas HDD with a usb connection would be better as it wouldn't even need a pc to be on :)

The western Digital ones would work out more expensive for me. Although they are £25 cheaper, I'd have to buy a USB NAS...

For the SD one? I wouldn't imagine you would stream HD content over wifi (you might if it's not wifi)

SD WD TV box £30
1tb NAS with USB £70 maybe?

Yeah I'm going with cables - I've got all my content stored on an Openfiler VM on my XenServer box. I'm planning to use an XP VM that runs iTunes with all the media added which can stream to the Apple TV.

It seems a waste to buy more storage because the device needs to access the content with USB. Having said that, it also seems a bit of a waste to have to add all the content to iTunes (and probably re-encode quite a lot of it) just so I can stream it to the Apple TV - but at least I can easily set it to automatically add anything that gets put on the network share.

What I really need is a device that will work straight over the LAN and handle the files itself, rather than needing a server app like iTunes.

I'm sure such a thing exists - I just need to find it, and consider whether it's got as good an interface as the Apple TV.

Apple TV seems like an odd name for something that doesn't actually have a TV in it. Am I alone in thinking this?

Yeah but that's out of my price range - the Apple TV is only £100.

Western Digital's media streamer will do that. So does A.C. Ryan's.
