Android and Exchange 2003SP2

We have finally configured the Exchange server and network correctly, to allow ActiveSync connections - we had to upgrade the Domain from 2000 to 2003 mode and Exchange from Mixed Mode to Native.
The iPhones connect, a Nokia N78 connects, only our sys admin with his T-Mobile G1, running FroYo (2.2) won't connect, it just says it couldn't connect...
I've been searching through Google, but I couldn't find anything useful. The require passcode is turned off, SSL *is* turned on and it is a self-signed certificate. That doesn't seem to bother any of the devices, except the Android device...

Is the activesync service in IIS set to allow Connections from anywhere?

Yes. Just double checked. Connections from anywhere/device.
It is also set to ignore client certificates.

He upgraded his G1 from 2.2 to 2.2.1 and it works...
