Hiya. I'm looking for a15" laptop with a budget of £500. What should I be looking for? Is i3 or i5 too much to expect? Where should I look? Any UK links appreciated

I'd go with a Sony or Toshiba (Samsung are also good, but a little more expensive.
I've bought about a dozen Satellite A10 and A11 models in the last 12 months and they are very good. Currently, I have a Sony F series, which is very nice (Core i7 and 8GB RAM, but they start with Core i3 and 4GB for reasonable money).
Lenovo and HP business laptops are good, but I've had a couple of the cheaper HP home / small business machines and the build quality is very poor.
My old Acer is 7 years old and still going strong (if slow). They aren't pretty and very plastic, but they do last - if you get a good one, but there do seem to be a lot of duds, not surprising considering they make more laptops than anyone else.

Also, any advice as to where to go looking, either in London (preferable, I guess) or online. It's the first time I've bought a Wintel laptop not through a corporate account! It's way more difficult!

Google Shopping for an idea of price (you might find yourself coming back for the purchase!), then the usual lot - Amazon, Play, DSG etc. No matter what, check out vouchercodes.com to see if you can get a % off offer or whatever. And if you have a cashback account with someone, remember to use it! Personally, I'm a fan of Acer and Tosh laptops, well-built with all the features you need at a good price IME.

That looks alright. I like the fact the RAM is supplied as 1x2GB SODIMMs, too.
