£530 - Who thinks this is going to sell?

I understand we ipad is so expensive as apple's fanboys will buy anything no matter how much it costs. But Samsung Galaxy for the same price? They got to be kidding!
I still don't understand what people use their ipads for anyway. I refuse to believe that anybody would shell out £500 just so he can do some light surfing on the sofa. There must be something else and I am missing it somehow. Or people have so much money they don't know what to do with and they buy tablets...

Compare it with smartphones: Smartphones are useful and you can use them all the time and pretty much anywhere. Can you say the same thing about tablets? Can you pull an ipad/galaxy tab/playbook out of your pocket when you are waiting on the bus or in a ticket line and do some web browsing? Or play a quick game? Or check share price/football score/train times/weather update etc? You can but would you really want to? I don't even have an mp3 players just so I don't have to carry it around with me (I use my phone for music).

Using tablet at home? What on earth for? I have a proper rig, I have a laptop, I have a book reader and I have a smartphone? Why would I need a tablet at home? So no, I won't be getting one, especially not for £500. I would consider spending £200 for when I do travelling e.g. holiday but that's about it.

And they will come down in price as soon as we have a better competition next years. Right now they are milking the market..

My boss has an iPad. It has pretty much replaced his laptop.

He has an office app on there for docs, spreadsheets, etc
A project management app
Photoshop App for picture editing
LogMeIn for connecting to his office machines.
He uses an Apple bluetooth keyboard with it.
Apps for his kids.

I suppose it helps to know what you are going to use it for before buying one.

Hopefully Android 3 will have Tablet optimisations included.

I won't presume to speak for anyone else, but my iPad has replaced the notebook I use to keep work-related notes in - that's a notebook by Moleskine or Cartesio btw, not Asus or EeePC - and I did this for one reason alone; backup. As an aside, it has also replaced my eBook reader, is my email and web-browsing device of choice, generates quickie 'on-the-spot' invoices, acts as my diary, my radio, my TV, my A-Z. I can't, obviously, whip it out of my pocket to text a client or refer to some notes - it's in my bag - but why would I want to; in those situations, that's what my smartphone's for.

As for the Galaxy Tab, whilst it looks like a solid product (albeit one that appears to be hampered by a lack of finesse) at this price I'm sure it will struggle. The logic is probably that although it's only a 7-incher, the extra features (camera, phone-calling ability and ummm, plays Flash content, sort of...) make up for this somehow - but I don't think many folks'll be convinced enough to stump up the cash for it, personally. And let's not forget that Samsung launched this with a £799 price-tag, so perhaps they simply don't have a full grasp of where they expect their product to fit into the overall tablet 'scene'.

In the US, bookshop Barnes & Noble has recently introduced the Nook Color(sic) - a 7" Android tablet slanted towards (duh) eReading at a more realistic $250 US; word on the forums is that it won't be long before the B&N front end is bypassd ('rooted' ?) to gain as much functionality as the Android OS allows. There's also a slew of other Android tablets due to appear in the coming months, suggesting the Galaxy Tab will be in for an even tougher time of it by Christmas. And of course, there's always the spectre of a 7" iPad on the horizon - don't believe it myself, but that possibility alone should be enough to have Samsung execs running for the bathroom...

That Toshiba is the most appealing Android Tablet I've seen.

Are Samsung trying to pitch this alongside the iPad, and looking to further establish the pricepoint that Apple set?

Apple products have built the "quality costs" mindset into their customer base quite successfully - maybe Samsung want to try the same. Doomed to fail imho, though.

The Toshiba does look much better value than the Tab or the iPad.

It's still a niche product and, even at £329, I'd still rather buy a value laptop.

At this price I wouldnt have one. But I've seen it for £99 when you take out a monthly data bundle. At that price point (as I'd be likely to want data anyway) I think it's good.

Then it's probably not aimed at you to be fair.

I've been considering what to do when my current mobile contract expires. Do I got with something like a 4-inch+ smartphone (iPhone, Galaxy, Desire HD) and use it for telecoms, browsing, book reading and social networking or do I split the devices and get a fairly basic phone and a tablet/tab device. Given that I want an eReader anyway maybe the smartphone will be too small and I'd be better to compliment a phone with say a 7-inch Tab.

It's just a train of though mind you and there's +/- to both arguments. It is an example though how there does exist a market for tablets for those who dont have/want a "rig, laptop, reader and smartphone".

I saw the Tab in Tesco yesterday, it was the first time I've seen something demo'd in the store and there wasn't someone playing with it.
I had a little go, but I couldn't really make head nor tail of it. It was playing some horrid dance music that I wanted to shut off, but I couldn't find the music player...
Played with it for about five minutes then walked off, I'll hang on for the second generation iPad.
