Got my update today... An htc Mozart

Found out a few days ago that windows 7 phones don't support the encryption required for them to connect to Exchange servers. /facepalm.

They do support the encryption used to connect to exchange servers - although our self-signed certificate is for the wrong domain, so I am having problems at the moment...

On the plus side, it protects me from going to untrusted sources, on the downside, unlike the iPhone, I cannot tell it, that I still want to communicate with it, even if the certificate is dodgy...

In general, I'm very impressed with it so far. The audio quality, both from the built in speakers and through the headphones is way ahead of the iPhone. The Zune software is also much nicer than iTunes, on Windows.

The real kicker, no cut & paste

They seem to think they can do as well as the iPhone by starting where the iPhone started and moving forward from there .

Thing is though, multi-tasking and cut & paste can be patched in. I doubt very much they can patch in the encryption that Exchange needs - the CPU just isn't good enough to do it in realtime and maintain something like acceptable response elsewhere. So they've basically sabotaged it - they've hardcoded the phones not to be 'business useful'. I assume there's a 'Windows 7 Phone Enterprise' in there somewhere waiting to be pushed out in a few months time...

I'm still on 4.0 as I can't find leopard anywhere. There was a copy at work, but it seems to have gone walkies.

Slower iPhones and Androids can do it, heck the old Windows Mobile devices running at a quarter of the speed can attach to Exchange... That, plus all the article on how to get Windows Phone 7 working with Exchange seem to show that it does work. As I said above, the problem seems to be with self-signed SSL certificates not being accepted, not with Exchange itself.

What I want for my iPhone, is the ability to disable the third party multi-tasking, it is a complete pain.

Edit: Also, if Exchange support isn't built in, why does adding an e-mail account give the option of adding an Exchange Server account?

There's a setting on exchange servers which is basically 'only allow phones to connect if they support on-board encryption'. By default that's on but you can switch it off. If you switch it off, old iPhones and windows mob and android can connect, because the server doesn't insist on the encryption being there. However you shoudn't switch that setting off. if you don't have that setting on and then phone gets lost or stolen and it has personal information on it say as an email attachment, you are in breach of the data protection act in the uk and both the owner and the company could face prosecution.. So if you actually like being in a job as a sysop, you don't switch that setting off. In other words, none of those phones can connect to a properly configured exchange system.

It's similar to allowing people to connect to SMTP or POP servers withput SSL. yes, you can set it up that way, but you'd be an idiot.

The self signed certs is a different issue but still a valid one. Blackberries, suffer from that too.
