Just to warn anyone thinking about "upgrading" the AVG Free Edition to the newly released v2011 version, DON'T!!! It's rubbish. I've just done a wipe and clean install of Windows XP on an old laptop at work - it was running pretty speedy until I made the mistake of installing the Free Edition of AVG 2011. The PC has now slowed to an absolute crawl, from clicking on items takes up to a minute to open them - had to force-shutdown by pressing the power button. It's also blocking auto-runs on CD-ROMs, which the older AVG 9 didn't. Don't install it, whatever you do, it's buggy as hell. Now uninstalling it... watch this space. |

I'm not usually a pro-Microsoft person, but I'll make an exception for two pieces of software: Microsoft Office & Microsoft Security Essentials. MSE is lightweight, unobtrusive and free; I install it on every Windows PC I get my hands on and can't fault it. |

Yes, Microsoft Security Essentials is usually my second choice, but AVG v8 and v9 have been very good at what they do and didn't hog the processor or slow things down - they also seemed to detect more suspect stuff than the Microsoft one. Sadly, AVG seem to have dropped the ball with this new 2011 version, maybe they should have beta tested this a bit more thoroughly. As soon as I uninstall it, the PC shot back into life again, so it must have been that. After I uninstalled it, an online feedback form popped up asking why I uninstalled it, so I gave them a piece of my mind!! |

I've switched to Avast. It's lighter than AVG, Avira and MSE all of which used to be good but have become much more bloated... |

Weird. My mum's running AVG 2011 Free Edition on her aged XP laptop and it's going like a greasy poo - bloody rapid! Must be confined to the 64-bit version then ![]() |

Not that I know of. I've seen improvement - dramatic improvement on one old P4 desktop running XP 32 bit, significant difference noticed on a 2yr old laptop running Vista 32bit, and I changed my my gaming machine on 7 32 bit because of those (not sure I saw any difference apart from no adverts to pay). |

I had been using Kaspersky trial, but it ran out - we are supposed to be getting Trend Micro corporate shortly... So I tried AVG Free on the machine, but it slowed the web to a crawl, ZDNet.com went from about 2 seconds to load, to locking the browser up for about 2-3 minutes. Disabling AVG Free's web checking sped it back up to about 2 seconds... AVG Free, worse than a virus! |

My sister's computer had slowed to a crawl and she got someone in to sort it. The first thing they did was replace avg with avast. |

I've found that Avast has been getting a bit bloated, too. Which is a shame, as it's always been my favourite. At work we use F-Secure, and it's pretty good. But at home I think I'd rather stick to a Mac. ![]() |

The precautionary principle has taken precedence. Swapped over to Avast last night - very pleased. |
