Apple's being pretty cagey with the hard specs of the iPhone 3G S, but apparently T-Mobile Netherlands didn't get the message -- it's just posted up a specs page listing 256MB of RAM and a 600MHz CPU. That's up from 128MB and 412MHz in the first-gen and the 3G, and it's basically exactly what was rumored. Of course, the 3G S also has that new PowerVR SGX graphics chip that supports OpenGL ES 2.0, so the total speed boost is probably more than just pure clock speed, but we'll find out for sure when we get our hands on one.

With OpenGL, I guess we're now looking at a fairly serious game boy and a huge number of fairly easily ported 3D games.

I wonder if the battery life suffers, or if they've struck a good balance.

That's over twice as fast as my first PPC Mac. I can't recall how much memory I had in it, mind you.

If it was anything like mine, it had about 8MB of RAM!

I imagine it will be like the NGage but a lot better.

There were a lot of very good games on the NGage and the potential for the iPhone with specs like that is very good.

The NGage had direct ports of Tomb Raider and Tony Hawk skating games so the iPhone could be amazing!

The thing I hate is that there will now be three 'tiers' of apps on the app store now.

Currently, there are just two tiers. Apps that support iPod touch, and apps that support both.

Now that this third tier has been added, developers will need to create two versions of apps (one for each version of Open GL). Is there not a technology that means developers can write one app, and it will look slicker on the faster hardware but still run at less detailed settings on older hardware?

I think it's a really bad idea.

I haven't seen the final 3.0 API, but I'd imagine there are hooks that can be used to determine what system the app is running on, so developers can enable features for only systems that support them.

Yeah but with there now being two systems, with two version of Open GL developers will be forced to write two versions if they want the app to be supported on both systems. :?

It's not a case of features, it's a case of whether you can see it or not lol

Quake 3 isn't going to run on the older platforms, but should run brilliantly on the new one. Perhaps it should default to the Q2 rendering engine on older hardware? That's a lot of extra bloat.

And you're not going to be able to run a sat-nav-y on anything using OS 2.x . Some apps just won't run on some systems, but for those that can, it should be simple to enable features for various configurations.

Definitely. And there are apps out there that already do it for iPhone vs iPod Touch, I'm sure.

The example in my head is the Skype app. I use it for IM chat on miPod.
