Right, gf's laptop hasn't been able to connect to a wireless network for a while now. Now that I can look at it in person I have put the wireless card back in correctly (it wasn't because I suggested replacing it and it wasn't done correctly). It still doesn't work.
Device manager says that there is no problem so I started looking at the on/off button which is part of the keyboard. I have removed and replaced the keyboard in case there was a bad connection with one of the ribbon cables and this still hasn't helped.
So my question is, is it worth remapping the key to see if it solves the problem? Will it be too much trouble?

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.
