Greetings,
My mother is trying to convert our collection of VHS tapes to digital format before it's too late, and has asked me to do something about it. Now the options are plentiful; we could get it done professionally, but that is expensive, we could by a DVD VHS HDD combi recorder, but that's also expensive, and essentially useless once we've recorded our tapes and moved on to blu-ray.
Is there a way I could hook up the tape recorder to my pc and digitise it through an open source option, or at least something cheaper? I really need it putting in basic terms as this is completely alien to me. My pc should be up to the job, and has a Radeon 4800 card if that makes any difference.
Cheers in advance Helsing

Buy a second hand converter on eBay, use it and then sell it on again.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

When I've tried "cheap and cheerful" ways of doing this via PC, it hasn't worked well, sound and images not in synch, picture quality iffy. Mind you, VHS is dire when you go back to it after DVD.
Best bet probably as suggested, buy something built for the job second hand and sell on when you're done.

the way we did it as to just plug our video player into our DVD recorder, set the DVD recorder to the channel the video player was broadcasting on, and let it do its thing. you could probably do a similar thing with a PC containing an analogue TV card (play the video, record it to the hard drive, then burn it to DVD)

Have a look at Canopus ADVC-300, used to use one all the time at work getting things on and off Umatic and Beta tapes to make up DVD showreels. Then of course you'll need to have some software capable of capturing the feed. http://www.smartdv.co.uk/product.php/76/1/ - but look around for a second hand one.

I'd go with the first option. I did a similar thing with 300 videos and it took far too long to capture, convert & burn the DVD's on the PC. The DVD recorder did it in one go with only a couple of mins to finalise after the recording was done. If you're anywhere near London or Surrey I've got a DVD recorder you can borrow for this.
