HP Jetdirect setup

As you might know, I have been attempting to get an elderly HP printer into the 21st century so my Mac can see it again.

I've just bought a Jetdirect 600n card, plugged it in and seen that it was good. The card comes with a default IP address (192.0.0.192), but I've proved it is working by printing to it from an older Mac and also a Vista Home Premium PC.

Now comes the tricky part. I need to set the IP address to something proper in my 192.188.x.x range, rather than the default.

I did manage, somehow, to set the PC's network to the same IP range, and found the Jetdirect internal print server via Firefox. I then set a proper IP address in the control panel within my normal network range. So far, so good.

The problem is I can't access the Jetdirect again. Once I'd set the new IP address and reset the PC's network settings to normal, it vanished. I can't get back to the control panel. The snag is I've been round Vista's networking control panels so many times now, I'm getting dizzy. I can't see to get Vista to see the printer's web server at all now.

So, I reset the Vista network to the 192.0.0.x range again, and still no show from the printer.

I've tried a so-called cold reset on the printer, hoping it would return to the default IP address, but it still won't show up.

I'm now stuck. I can get the PC to work normally; I can get it so it's on the odd IP address; but I can't get it to talk to the Jetdirect any more.

Any ideas?

Oh, and while we're there, is there any way I can save network settings in Vista so I can have a selection to pick from, like in OS X?

Cheers!

Sorry I can't be very useful here HK - OSX and Vista are my kryptonite.

If you could take a number and return to your seat, someone from our Networking dept. should be along shortly.

Give me a shout tomorrow.

Shouldn't take long to fix.

It most certainly is! Old Faithful lives again!

Many thanks, Simon. I owe you at least one beer for that. We must try and get together at some point so I can make good on the deal!

Better than that. My PC became a zombie puppet at the hands of a master. :)

I see. Well, it's all a bit embarrassing really.

I'd managed to set the printer's IP address to exactly the same one as the PC...

:?
