Ok, my 3G has just bitten the dust in rather terminal fashion, so I'm looking at replacement options. TBH I will probably get the iPhone 4, but wanted to assess other options rather than just doing the sheep thing. I've had a look at the Nexus S and whilst it's quite reasonable, the screen isn't as good as the iPhone 4 and on a comparable contract it was £70 more on the initial phone price.

Anyone got any suggestions for other things to look at? General usage (aside from phone/text) is internet/email and music, and that's about it. Don't care about cameras, skype/video calling etc.

With all the phones from CES to be released in the coming months, I'd wait for them to appear if you're serious about considering non-Apples.

Thing is, I'm completely phone-less at the moment, so I'd like to try and avoid waiting too long if possible, unless there's something really profound coming out. I'm sure there was a thread about it on here, might have to hunt.

Rumours abound that Android 2.3 handsets are appearing in February, and new handsets such as the LG Optimus 2x are due out any day now.

Of course there's always the Desire HD, but if you're really bothered about the screen resolution you won't find a phone with as many pixels as the iPhone 4.

I'm surprised the Nexus S screen didn't interest you Jon. But if that's the case, I suspect you may as well get the 4. Especially if you're already ok with the Apple walled garden.

A Galaxy S would be loads cheaper though...

The whole curved screen thing was a nice touch, but the screen wasn't as clear or as vibrant as the one on the iPhone, which is more what matters to me.

Just go and get the iPhone. You know thats what you want to do anyway.

Innit.

The Samsung screens are technologically way better than iPhone. But sounds like you've made your decision.

If you can afford it and you don't have a very good reason not to, I'm afraid I agree.

Bloody hell what contract is this

I dont like the Nexus S if I'm honest. It doesnt feel like a premium phone and ultimately I prefer the HTC Sense UI over vanilla Android.

As you're an iPhone user though I suspect another iPhone is going to be the obvious road to go down.

The contract was on O2, £30 a month for 18 months on each of them (the Nexus S is £20 contract and £10 for the 500MB of data you get as standard on the iPhone contracts). Nexus was £300 on top of the contract, iPhone is £230.

There were a couple of points where the Nexus is better, in particular the fact that it supports FLAC, comes with more disk space and has a pretty decent compass as part of the GPS. It was a bit difficult to put an accurate description on handling simply because it was attached to the store's security device. I'm curious as to how the Samsung screens are better, because aside from the curve on the Nexus, the iPhone screen was a lot clearer and more vibrant to me.

I'm pretty certain it will be an iPhone, I'm just aware that I don't know a lot about other phones / manufacturers so wanted to make sure I'd at least tested a couple of other options before settling on something.

Jon, I don't know if you've had a go with many other phones but, I find the Android interface a poor second to the iPhone 3.

Note to fanbois:
This is not an attempt to start a flame war, simply my opinion - having had regular access to several Android phones over the past 6 months.

Just for balance, I also acknowledge the shortcomings of the iPhone experience, having owned one for more than a year.

Which UI was it running e.g. plain android, sense, touchwiz??

I absolutely love HTC Sense tbh
