Hi Everyone,

Please help an old duffer with some advice on streaming media. I currently have a number of compnents that I think could form at least part of an integrated approach to home media, but I am missing the overall knowledge to make this work.
I currently have:

A Cisco WAG320 Modem/Router with wireless that has UPNP capability
A DLINK NAS drive connected to the router via gigabit ethernet
Win 7 PC
Potentially an iPad (my wife is hankering after one and it's her birthday soon)
My TV is HD 1080 connected to a Humax Freesat PVR (No digital freeview till 2012),a good but old and traditional stereo amp and speaker, and an upscaling DVD player (not bluray [yet])
The Humax box will be powerline ethernet connected to the network in a couple of weeks (currently I use a long cable when I want to watch iPlayer on the TV, 'cos the wireless signal is very weak there)
In another room, I have a traditional CD player and stero amp connected to some big speakers.
The player and amp sit on top of a big CD storage chest that contains hundreds of CD's that I would like to convert to high fidelity audio files.
My laptop stores all my audio and AV media, using Photoshop Elements to organise it. I have previously tried to use PSE to organise the data on the NAS, but it ain't happy with that.

I would appreciate any advice you can give please. Please assume my knowledge is zero of the streaming technology and UPNP

First step is to decide exactly what you want.

It sounds like you require a centralised store for audio & video files with the ability to stream to different rooms.

Do you require the same content to be streamed to multiple rooms at the same time (house party mode)?
Do you want to stream audio, video or both?
What kit is on permenantly?
What network connectivity is available?
What's your budget?

Sorry for the delay in responding, but am on hols in Florida.

Yes, centralized store for audio and photo / video is what I want. And yes, I want to stream them all. It's not likely I would want to simultaneously stream anything other than music, and even that is dependent on the relative cost.

WAG 320 modem/ router and gigabit switch, plus mirrored NAS drive (gigabit connected to router) are permanently on. Oh, and so is the Humax box, for what that is worth.

Gigabit cabling is limited to the "switch room" (a locked and nice cold cupboard upstairs) and my home office beneath it. It's impracticable to run gigabit cables anywhere else, and the rooms that are so wired are front and centre of the house while the TV and audio gear is on the rear wall of the house. The WAG320 is N wireless capable but I get significant signal drop at the desired AV locations. I am happy to use Solwise home wiring to get network connectivity to the AV locations.

Budget? Nothing formalized. But if it was to cost low to middle hundreds that would be OK.
